My iPhone & Me, 6 Months Later.
I purchased my iPhone in mid-October, so it’s more like seven months, but whatever… we’re not here to split hairs.
I bought my 8G iPhone as a switchover from a Blackberry Curve, which in my opinion at the time, was a clunky, not-what-I-preferred type of device. It didn’t work well with my Mac-based lifestyle, my office (read–me) had not yet implemented its BES (for mail delivery, syncing, etc.), and I was using a device not to the fullest of its abilities. I needed a change… I needed some excitement.
I went to my AT&T store and purchased the 8G unit for about $100 (”traded” the $299 BB unit and paid the difference to the iPhone), and nearly sprinted out the door. I was excited to get it hooked up to a native mothership (e.g. my Macbook Pro, OS X Tiger & iTunes), and get to tinkering.
After getting it added to our existing AT&T account, I was happily txting, browsing and calling along, and could not have been happier.
Now six (or seven, however you want to count it) months down the road, am I still the happy iPhone user?
The simple answer is: yes.
I have had a share of issues, nothing that wasn’t hard to fix. I have had my disappointments with the device, but those are being remedied by the *big* software update in June. The most of my beefs are as follows:
- No MMS. (no idea when this is coming)
- No (full) enterprise support. (coming fully in June)
- Lack of customizable SMS tones. (no idea)
- No contact search feature. (I use “favorites” in my contacts anyways, for frequently dialed people)
Yea… that’s it. Out of six months, I have four beefs. I have to reboot the device about once a month, but that’s no biggie–that’s normal for a computer.
I love that I can be out in the middle of nowhere, on an Arby’s kick, and pull up my Google Maps to find the nearest Arby’s for when I’ll be in that area, with added directions on how to get there. I love that all of my calendar events, address book items, photos, movies, music, etc., is all right there on the nifty little handheld.
Kim is envious of it, which is why she may try & snag one around graduation time, which hopefully she can get the 3G version, and then she’ll be the superior techno-wizard in the household.
I was smart and asked for a rubberized case for Christmas, to protect the side chrome from scratches, as well as it gave the device a better “feel” for when I was holding it my hands. I also received (as a gift) a protective screen (The Invisible Shield to be precise) that covers the entire phone with a non-scratch, plastic film, that offers a 2nd layer of protection for both the front screen and rear surface, if it’s in my pocket, next to keys, whatever.
I will be honest & say that I love my little device, it really is a top-notch piece of techno-equipment, and when they release the software update in June, it will be even better. Once MMS is implemented, as well as a contact search feature, it will be perfect (in my view).
If you’re on the fence about purchasing one, go ahead!!! ![]()
